The Congress party has labelled the Centre's decision to extend Agniveer tenure as a "U-turn" driven by upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. Congress MP Pawan Khera stated that the move was motivated by the large number of youth from these states aspiring to join the armed forces. The party has consistently opposed the Agnipath scheme, arguing it adversely affects the armed forces and the future of young recruits.
