Jharkhand Survey to Document Native Livestock and Poultry Breeds

Times of India · environment

Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) has launched a survey across Jharkhand to document unique, unmapped domestic animal and poultry breeds. The initiative, funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, aims to register these 'desi' breeds with the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR). This registration is crucial for conserving their germplasm, as these resilient breeds are currently decreasing due to cross-breeding for higher yields. The documentation will help researchers study breed traits, support farmers, and prevent the dilution of hardy local genetic resources.
