Telangana Prepares Foodgrain Buffer To Counter El Nino Drought Impact

Telangana is strengthening its foodgrain security buffer to protect 3.4 crore people dependent on the public distribution system (PDS) against potential drought and rising food prices due to El Nino. Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to plan procurement and stock management in advance for uninterrupted supplies, even if rainfall is deficient. The state is also examining the possibility of providing essential commodities like wheat flour through PDS to cushion households against price increases. Officials presented financial estimates for various distribution models, including subsidized rates.
