Skin Purging vs Irritation: Experts Advise Caution
HT - Lifestyle · lifestyle
Experts warn that not all breakouts from new skincare are 'skin purging.' While some products like retinoids and exfoliating acids can cause temporary acne flare-ups as skin cell turnover changes, persistent redness, burning, or discomfort may indicate irritation. Dr. Akriti Gupta advises against ignoring these signs, noting that 'purging' isn't a formal medical term and lacks strong scientific evidence. Dr. Karuna Malhotra emphasizes that if a product causes significant discomfort, it's a sign the skin barrier is struggling, and adding more products is a common mistake.
