The payee must send a demand notice within 30 days, and if payment isn't made within 15 days, a case can be filed. Conviction can result in up to two years imprisonment or a fine. The offence is bailable and can be settled at any stage.

बाउंस हुए चेक पर अब क्रिमिनल चार्ज लग सकता है और जेल भी हो सकती है। यह Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 की धारा 138 के तहत आता है। अगर चेक किसी कानूनी देनदारी के लिए दिया गया था और पैसों की कमी या बैंक की लिमिट पार होने की वजह से बाउंस हो गया, तो यह नियम लागू होगा। चेक लेने वाले को 30 दिन में नोटिस भेजना होगा। 15 दिन में पेमेंट न मिलने पर केस हो सकता है। सजा 2 साल तक की जेल या जुर्माना हो सकती है।
