South American Water Hyacinth Invades Lake Victoria, Costs $150M Annually

Hindustan Times · environment

Water hyacinth, a South American ornamental plant, has infested 53 countries globally. On Africa's Lake Victoria, it covered approximately 90 percent of the shoreline, significantly impacting fisheries, hydroelectric production, and agriculture. This invasive species, first spotted on the lake in 1989, forms thick mats that deplete oxygen, block sunlight for native plants, and clog irrigation systems. The economic cost of the invasion is estimated at $150 million per year, though removal efforts have managed to reduce its spread at times.
