Europe Supermarket Freezers Hacked, Food Spoiled; Cyberattackers Show Vulnerability

Hindustan Times · technology

Hackers have targeted supermarket refrigeration systems across Europe, raising temperatures in freezers to 50°C and spoiling large amounts of food. Attacks were reported in Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, and Estonia, following similar incidents in France. Analysts suggest the hackers exploited ageing control systems left accessible online with weak passwords. The aim appears to be demonstrating the ease with which food supply chains can be disrupted. The US Pentagon is also investigating freezer failures at military bases as a suspected hack.
