NPCI Defers UPI Merchant Discount Rate Implementation Till After Diwali

Hindustan Times - Business · business

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has postponed the implementation of a 0.4% merchant discount rate (MDR) on select UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. This decision, announced just two days before the scheduled rollout, defers the fee until after the Diwali festive season. The MDR was intended for select Person-to-Merchant (P2M) UPI transactions above ₹2,000, with merchants, not consumers, expected to pay the fee. The deferment aims to alleviate concerns during the busy festive period, with a new implementation date to be announced later.
