The United Nations has elected five new judges to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for nine-year terms. The election took place at UN headquarters with candidates needing a majority in both the General Assembly and Security Council. Dapo Akande, Francois Alabrune, Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, Rena Lee, and Phoebe Okowa were chosen for the 15-member panel. This comes as the ICJ faces a record caseload, including South Africa's genocide case against Israel over the Gaza war and a case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar.
