Thanjavur Houses Searched For Caliphate Movement Sympathisers

Special Intelligence Unit personnel conducted searches at the homes of six individuals in Thanjavur suspected of sympathising with a global movement to establish an Islamic State and Caliphate. These individuals were reportedly involved with Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT), which aims to overthrow democratically elected governments through 'jihad and terrorist activities'. The Ministry of Home Affairs declared HuT a terrorist organisation in 2024 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act due to its promotion of radicalisation and support for terror groups. The searches were conducted after obtaining court orders.
