Global Wildlife Populations Plummet 73% Due To Habitat Loss

Times of India · environment

Monitored wildlife populations worldwide have declined by an average of 73 percent over the last fifty years, according to WWF's Living Planet Report 2024. Habitat loss and degradation, primarily driven by food production, is identified as the leading threat. This shrinking space fragments animal homes, making food and water harder to find and increasing human-wildlife conflict. While not indicating species extinction, the report warns this gradual thinning poses significant risks to ecosystems and human life. Conservation efforts have shown success in some areas, stabilizing or recovering certain populations.
