Bengaluru Sisters Keep Umbrella Repair Craft Alive Amidst Modern Consumerism

Times of India · interesting

Sisters Selvi and Amaravathi, aged 52 and 60, are preserving an age-old craft by repairing umbrellas on the streets of Bengaluru. Having moved from Tamil Nadu 40 years ago, they are now the last practitioners of a trade their entire family once followed. They travel by bus, offering repairs for handles, pipes, ribs, and fabric, earning between Rs 500 and Rs 1,500 daily. While acknowledging rising expenses, they value the profession that supported their families and continue their work to honour it.
