India's Centre Opposes Tax Cuts For Same-Sex Couples

Hindustan Times · politics

The Union government has informed the Karnataka High Court that same-sex couples cannot receive tax exemptions typically granted to spouses and family members. This stance is based on the argument that such exemptions would implicitly recognize same-sex marital relationships, which are not legally acknowledged in India. The Centre stated that tax laws apply to legally recognized relationships and any challenge should address marriage laws, not tax provisions. Extending these benefits could also create opportunities for tax evasion, the government argued.
