US Housing Market Struggles Despite 1.5% Sales Rise

US existing home sales saw a 1.5% increase in September, reaching an annual rate of 3.99 million units, surpassing economists' expectations. However, the market continues to face significant challenges, with sales remaining below 4 million units for the second consecutive month and declining 2.2% year-on-year. High mortgage rates, which reached 7.40% in September, are a primary factor hindering affordability for buyers. Despite an increase in housing inventory to its highest level since November 2019, demand remains weak due to elevated borrowing costs.
