Drone LiDAR Scans Rugged Australian Bushland, Uncovering Hidden Aboriginal Rock Shelters

Times of India · science

Researchers have utilized drone-based LiDAR technology to scan difficult-to-access bushland in Australia's Blue Mountains, leading to the discovery of three previously unregistered Aboriginal rock shelters. These shelters contain significant cultural heritage, including red hand stencils and stone artefacts. The findings, published in the journal Remote Sensing, demonstrate how aerial mapping can assist Aboriginal communities and archaeologists in locating and documenting vital cultural sites. This technology offers a more efficient method for surveying regions where traditional exploration is challenging due to steep terrain and dense vegetation.
