237 Million-Year-Old Fossils Reveal First Amphibian To Live Entirely In Ocean
Hindustan Times · science
Scientists have discovered fossils of Gerrothorax maritimus, a heavily armoured amphibian that lived approximately 237 million years ago. Found in China's Guizhou Province, two nearly complete skeletons suggest this creature was the first known amphibian to inhabit the ocean exclusively. Measuring about 75cm, its bony armour likely protected it from marine predators and may have helped regulate salt exchange. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about amphibian evolution and their adaptation to marine environments.
