A report by the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General revealed that 79 detainees at the "Alligator Alcatraz" immigrant detention center in Florida were held in small metal enclosures for up to two hours. These "calming areas," measuring about 18 square feet, did not meet standards for humane treatment. The report noted these restrictive spaces were highly unconventional and may have been used as a disciplinary tool.
