India's Climate Adaptation Finance Needs Urgent Overhaul For Frontline Communities

Hindustan Times · environment

Climate change poses a direct threat to the livelihoods of rural and forest-dependent communities in India, yet adaptation finance decisions often exclude those most affected. While mitigation attracts significant investment, adaptation, which involves dispersed, locally specific interventions, struggles for funding. Developing countries need an estimated $310–365 billion annually by 2035, but international public adaptation finance was only $26 billion in 2023. COP31 presents an opportunity to shift focus from expenditure to measurable outcomes, ensuring finance directly addresses climate risks and builds resilience for vulnerable populations.
