Land Grant in 1639 Led to Chennai's Fort

In 1639, a land grant by Damarla Venkatapathy Nayak to the English for trading purposes led to the establishment of Fort St George. Construction finished in 1644, and the settlement around it grew, merging with an older town called Madraspatnam. The area was also known as Chennapatanam. Over time, Fort St George evolved from a trading post into a significant administrative and political centre, laying the foundation for modern Chennai.

सन 1639 में, डेमरला वेंकटपति नायक ने अंग्रेजों को व्यापार के लिए ज़मीन दी थी, जिससे फोर्ट सेंट जॉर्ज की नींव पड़ी। 1644 तक इसका निर्माण पूरा हो गया। इसके आसपास की बस्ती बढ़ी और मद्रासपटनम नाम के पुराने शहर में मिल गई। इस जगह को चेन्नपटनम भी कहते थे। धीरे-धीरे फोर्ट सेंट जॉर्ज एक व्यापारिक ठिकाने से बढ़कर एक अहम प्रशासनिक और राजनीतिक केंद्र बन गया, जिसने आज के चेन्नई की बुनियाद रखी।
