Mint · business

India's gold loan market is exhibiting early signs of strain after two years of strong growth. Major non-banking lenders like Bajaj Finance and Piramal Finance are reporting increased repayment troubles and asset quality concerns, particularly from short-tenure gold loans. Bajaj Finance saw a significant rise in stage-2 and stage-3 assets, largely from its gold loan portfolio, though it expects this to be transitional. Other lenders like IIFL Finance and Fedbank Financial Services also reported an increase in bad loans, indicating a potential shift in the market.
