Japan's First Named Ankylosaur Linked to Europe

Researchers have formally named Japan's first ankylosaur, Nipponopelta yezoensis, after a skull was discovered decades ago in Hokkaido. Using CT scanning and phylogenetic analysis, scientists determined this new species has an unexpected evolutionary relationship. It is more closely related to nodosaurids found in North America and Europe than to other Asian nodosaurids. This finding provides crucial insights into the distribution patterns of armored dinosaurs across ancient continents. The fossil is significant as it is the only Asian nodosaurid known from skull elements.
