18-Year-Old High Schooler Discovers Three Unusual Dwarf Galaxies
Times of India - India · india
Eighteen-year-old Julian Shapiro has discovered three peculiar dwarf galaxies, now catalogued as Shapiro Dwarf Galaxies I, II, and III. These galaxies are small, relatively isolated, and appear to have stopped forming stars, which is unusual for their location. Typically, isolated dwarf galaxies retain gas for star formation, while star-formation-quenched galaxies are found near massive ones. Shapiro's findings suggest they might be backsplash galaxies that passed near a larger galaxy, like the Pinwheel Galaxy, losing gas before moving away.
