Extinct Ontario Butterfly To Be Reintroduced After Nearly Four Decades

Times of India · environment

A butterfly species, the frosted elfin, which vanished from Ontario in 1988, is set to be reintroduced to the Canadian province. Scientists plan to bring eggs from New York to breed the butterflies in captivity. These will then be released into restored habitats within Ontario. The frosted elfin, measuring only 22-24 mm, relies on specific food plants like wild lupine and favours oak-pine woodlands. Its disappearance is attributed to habitat loss from urban development and agricultural expansion, making its return a significant conservation effort.
