Women Played Key Role In Ancient Migrations Shaping Konkani Ancestry

Times of India · science

A new genetic study by Hyderabad's CCMB has revealed that women were integral to ancient migrations that shaped the ancestry of Konkani-speaking communities along India's west coast. Researchers analyzed mitochondrial DNA from 295 Konkani individuals, comparing it with Eurasian genetic data. The findings indicate that maternal lineages reflect contributions from both established South Asian populations and West Eurasian ancestry. This research provides a more complete understanding of population movements in the region, highlighting the significant role of women in shaping India's ethnolinguistic history.
