Lebanon Asks UN for Peacekeepers to Replace UNIFIL

DW World · world

Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam addressed the UN General Assembly, calling for peacekeepers to remain in his country. He expressed concern that the withdrawal of UNIFIL troops could create a dangerous vacuum, especially as Israel operates within a self-declared security zone in southern Lebanon. The plea comes amidst a UNGA session where leaders from Pakistan and Iraq also spoke. This session followed controversial remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which led to a walkout by several delegates.
