Pilibhit Ramsar Bid Stalls Over Dam Data Withheld By Irrigation Dept

Efforts to gain Ramsar site status for Pilibhit's Sharda Sagar Dam have stalled as the irrigation department refuses to share technical data. The department cited dam safety, irrigation needs for over 1.26 lakh hectares, and local livelihoods as reasons for withholding information. Forest officials also objected to the department's auction of commercial fishing rights in the reservoir. They fear this will endanger aquatic wildlife, including protected turtles and crocodiles, and migratory birds. District authorities are now seeking guidance to resolve the impasse and protect the reservoir's ecosystem.

पीलीभीत के शारदा सागर बांध को रामसर साइट का दर्जा दिलाने के प्रयास रुक गए हैं क्योंकि सिंचाई विभाग तकनीकी डेटा साझा करने से इनकार कर रहा है। विभाग ने बांध की सुरक्षा, 1.26 लाख हेक्टेयर से अधिक के लिए सिंचाई की जरूरतें और स्थानीय आजीविका को जानकारी रोकने के कारण बताए हैं। वन अधिकारियों ने जलाशय में वाणिज्यिक मछली पकड़ने के अधिकारों की विभाग की नीलामी पर भी आपत्ति जताई है। उन्हें डर है कि इससे संरक्षित कछुओं और मगरमच्छों, और प्रवासी पक्षियों सहित जलीय वन्यजीवों को खतरा होगा। जिला अधिकारी अब गतिरोध को हल करने और जलाशय के पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र की रक्षा के लिए मार्गदर्शन मांग रहे हैं।
