सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट और एक ट्रायल कोर्ट की आलोचना की है कि उन्होंने गंभीर चोट के मामले में दो अपराधियों को जेल की सज़ा सुनाए बिना रिहा कर दिया। अदालतों ने 22 साल लंबे मुकदमे को नरमी बरतने का आधार बताया, जबकि पीड़ित का इलाज और गंभीर चोटें जारी थीं। SC ने कहा कि आरोपी जमानत पर थे और आपराधिक गतिविधियों में लिप्त रहे। शीर्ष अदालत ने आरोपियों को आत्मसमर्पण करने का आदेश दिया और हाईकोर्ट द्वारा नए सिरे से सुनवाई का निर्देश दिया, इसे गलत सहानुभूति का मामला बताया।
