Trichy's Roadside Rainwater Harvesting Pits Neglected, Leading to Inundation
Times of India · environment
Rainwater harvesting pits constructed at over 30 locations in Trichy are now in a dilapidated state, failing to manage surplus rainwater. These pits, measuring 20-100 square feet and up to 40 feet deep, were built at a cost of Rs 1 lakh each to recharge groundwater. However, due to poor maintenance, their inlets are blocked or they have risen above road level. This neglect has resulted in mild inundation in low-lying areas during recent rainfall, compromising their intended function of preventing waterlogging.
