Falklands Guanaco Herd Maintains Genetic Diversity Despite Population Crashes
Times of India · science
In the late 1930s, fifteen guanacos were introduced to Staats Island in the Falklands. Despite a severe cull in the late 1950s that reduced the population from 300 to just 10-20 animals, scientists were surprised to find the herd retains significant genetic diversity. Analysis revealed this diversity is comparable to mainland populations, even after two major population bottlenecks. This resilience offers valuable insights into conservation strategies for isolated animal populations facing extreme environmental pressures.
