Asteroid Impact May Have Fueled Ant Evolution Via 'Jumping Genes'
Times of India · science
A new study suggests the asteroid impact that wiped out dinosaurs 66 million years ago may have also spurred the rise of ants. Scientists found that mobile DNA segments, known as 'jumping genes' or transposable elements, surged in ant genomes around the same time. These elements can cause mutations and drive diversification. Researchers observed that ant groups with more jumping genes today also tend to have more species. This genetic mechanism may have connected the asteroid's environmental upheaval to the rapid expansion of major ant lineages.
