Cyprus Schengen Ambitions Face Hurdles Over Island's Division

Cyprus has technically met all European Commission recommendations to join the Schengen Area, aiming for Europe's border-free travel zone. Despite this readiness, political agreement is needed, and concerns have been raised by Austria and the Netherlands. These reservations stem from security issues related to the Green Line, which divides the island, and the presence of British military bases. The division of Cyprus since 1974 remains a significant obstacle to its full integration into the EU's Schengen zone.
