Private Banks' Profits Climb Despite Margin Pressure on Large Lenders
Times of India - Business · business
Private sector banks reported increased profits in the September quarter, even as the top three lenders experienced pressure on their net interest margins. Rising deposit costs, particularly due to FCNR(B) schemes, impacted funding expenses for major banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. Axis Bank saw the sharpest NIM decline, falling 37 basis points year-on-year. However, overall net profits for these banks saw growth, supported by non-interest income and controlled credit costs. Some mid-sized lenders and public sector banks, however, recorded NIM expansion.
