India's SIM Binding Rules To Affect WhatsApp, Telegram Users From Jan 1, 2027
Hindustan Times · technology
India's Department of Telecom will implement new SIM binding rules from January 1, 2027, potentially restricting access for messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. Platforms must verify that registered mobile numbers are linked to an active SIM card on the device by December 31, 2026. This measure aims to combat cybercrime, phishing, and digital arrest scams by ensuring accounts remain tied to a physical SIM. Users might face disruptions if their SIM is deactivated, replaced, or if they travel abroad, impacting account access and web sessions.
