The United States has lifted sanctions on Eritrea, a move the State Department stated aims to advance US regional interests in the Red Sea. The sanctions, initially imposed by the Biden administration in November 2021, targeted Eritrean forces and President Isaias Afwerki’s party over alleged atrocities in Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict. Eritrea welcomed the decision, calling the sanctions unwarranted and damaging.
