Prickly Pear Cactus Devastated 24 Million Hectares of Australian Land
Hindustan Times · environment
Introduced to Australia in 1788 for hedges and red dye, prickly pear cactus spread uncontrollably. By the 1920s, it had infested 24.3 million hectares in New South Wales and Queensland, rendering the land unusable for farming and overwhelming native vegetation. Despite legislative efforts and rewards, the invasion persisted. In 1926, the Cactoblastis cactorum moth was released, successfully clearing up to 80 percent of infested land in Queensland by 1933, though the cactus remains a problem.
