SC rejects Abu Salem's release plea

The Supreme Court has ruled that undertrial incarceration can only be offset against one sentence, not both, even if sentences run concurrently. Gangster Abu Salem had sought release by counting his undertrial period twice. The court found his calculations flawed, stating concurrent sentences operate simultaneously. The court also clarified that the government's assurance to Portugal, limiting his sentence to 25 years, does not convert a life sentence into a fixed term.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने कहा है कि विचाराधीन अवधि की गिनती सिर्फ एक सज़ा के लिए होगी, दोनों के लिए नहीं, भले ही सज़ाएँ साथ-साथ चल रही हों। गैंगस्टर अबू सलेम ने अपनी विचाराधीन अवधि को दो बार गिनकर रिहाई की मांग की थी। कोर्ट ने उसकी गणना को गलत बताया और कहा कि साथ चलने वाली सज़ाएँ एक ही समय में लागू होती हैं।
