Dozens of Gold Prospectors Killed in Air Strikes on Egypt-Sudan Border

BBC World · world

At least 72 civilians prospecting for gold in Sudan's River Nile state were killed in air strikes on Saturday, according to regional rights group Emergency Lawyers. The group stated that jets targeted artisanal miners at popular gold mining sites, destroying camps and excavation pits. Emergency Lawyers condemned the deliberate targeting of unarmed civilians, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law and potentially a war crime. Neither the Egyptian government nor Sudanese authorities have commented on the incident, though Cairo has faced similar accusations previously.
