Allahabad HC Stays Murder Conviction For Man Seeking To Contest UP Polls

The Allahabad High Court has stayed the murder conviction and life sentence of Nandan Lal Rai, who wishes to contest the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The court stated that a common citizen's right to livelihood is as important as a politician's right to contest. The conviction was stayed to allow Rai to survive while his appeal against the murder conviction is heard. He was convicted by a Varanasi court for a 2017 murder case. Rai seeks to contest as an independent or potentially on a BJP ticket.

इलाहाबाद हाई कोर्ट ने नंदन लाल राय की हत्या के मामले में सज़ा और उम्रकैद को रोक दिया है। राय आगामी उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा चुनाव लड़ना चाहते हैं। कोर्ट ने कहा कि एक आम नागरिक के रोज़ी-रोटी का अधिकार उतना ही ज़रूरी है जितना एक राजनेता के चुनाव लड़ने का अधिकार। राय की हत्या के मामले में सज़ा के खिलाफ अपील पर सुनवाई के दौरान उनके जीवन-यापन की अनुमति देने के लिए सज़ा रोकी गई है। उन्हें वाराणसी की एक अदालत ने 2017 के हत्या के मामले में दोषी ठहराया था। राय एक निर्दलीय उम्मीदवार के तौर पर या संभवतः बीजेपी के टिकट पर चुनाव लड़ना चाहते हैं।
