The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed concern over the mass detention of protesters in Delhi who were demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The UN body stated that any restrictions on peaceful protests must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality. It also called for the immediate and unconditional release of those arbitrarily detained. India has rejected these concerns, describing them as misplaced and an unwarranted interference in its internal affairs.
