UN Official Sees Peace Window in DR Congo Amidst Worsening Conflict

A senior UN official has informed the Security Council that a "window of opportunity" exists for peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, despite the ongoing deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation. Huang Xia, the UN special envoy for the Great Lakes Region, noted progress in US- and Qatar-led peace processes, including ceasefire commitments made in July 2025 and a peace deal formalized in December.
