Antarctica's Two Flowering Plants Show Contrasting Responses to Warming

Times of India · environment

A seven-year study on King George Island revealed that Antarctica's only two native flowering plants, Antarctic hairgrass and Antarctic pearlwort, reacted differently to long-term warming. Researchers used open-top chambers to simulate warmer conditions for comparison with plants in natural environments. Antarctic hairgrass reduced its water transport and photosynthesis, possibly due to increased freeze-thaw events. In contrast, Antarctic pearlwort increased its leaf hydraulic conductivity and photosynthetic rate, adapting through enhanced water transport and heat conservation. These contrasting strategies highlight the complex ways plant life adapts to changing climates.
