Male Elephant Carcass Found in Latehar Forest; Probe Ordered

Times of India · environment

The carcass of a male elephant, estimated to be 30 to 40 years old, was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition in Latehar district's Vishunpur forest. Villagers had reported seeing a limping elephant days earlier, prompting a search that led to the find. Preliminary findings suggest the tusker died four to eight days prior, possibly from untreated leg wounds leading to septicemia. Officials are investigating the cause of death, including potential human-elephant conflict, and examining forest patrolling lapses.
