Hyderabad Faces Water Crisis: 70% Groundwater Used, 15 Units Over-Exploited

Times of India · environment

CURE is experiencing a severe water crisis, with approximately 70% of its annual groundwater resources depleted. The latest assessment reveals that 15 out of 16 groundwater assessment units in Hyderabad district are now classified as critical or over-exploited. This alarming situation is attributed to rampant groundwater extraction for residential, commercial, and industrial needs, exacerbated by inadequate municipal water supply which meets only about 30% of the city's demand. The over-extraction indicates groundwater is being withdrawn faster than it can be replenished, posing a significant long-term threat.
