Bangladesh Garment Workers Protest Demanding Higher Wages Amidst Economic Challenges

TV9 Hindi · business

Around 10 lakh garment workers in Bangladesh have protested, leading to the closure of approximately 600 factories. The workers are demanding a minimum monthly wage increase to 30,000 Taka (around 23,000 Indian Rupees), citing rising living costs. Currently, the minimum wage is 12,500 Taka, which they find insufficient for basic needs. Factory owners face pressure from rising production costs, including electricity and gas, and intense international market competition. Despite Bangladesh being the second-largest garment exporter globally, workers' wages have not kept pace with inflation, creating significant economic strain.
