The UDF government in Kerala is embroiled in controversy following an Excise Department order that permitted a bakery in Chalakudy, Thrissur, to stock and sell hortiwine. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan flagged the "unconsulted" order, leading to the revocation of the licence by Excise Minister M. Liju. The minister stated the licence was issued as per existing rules, but it infringed on policy-making prerogatives. The opposition CPI(M) labelled the government's reversal a "political stunt" and a sign of administrative dysfunction.
