Democratic candidate Randy Villegas has defeated Republican incumbent David Valadao for California's 22nd congressional district. Villegas, an educator and son of Mexican immigrants, ran on a campaign addressing the rising cost of living and backlash against immigration raids. His victory represents a win for the Democratic Party's progressive wing. The election outcome reflects a national trend of voters punishing the incumbent party over economic concerns and immigration policies, particularly among Latino voters who have swung back towards Democrats.
