US Program Removes 600,000 Pounds of Ghost Traps

A US cleanup program has removed over 14,000 lost fishing traps, weighing nearly 600,000 pounds, in just two years. These "ghost traps" continue to catch marine life, with nearly 36,000 animals documented as trapped. The initiative, led by William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science, is expanding with 11 new projects in seven states. These projects aim to remove an additional 15,450 traps and create or sustain 128 jobs, while also protecting fisheries and preventing future gear loss.
