Dutch Scientists Create Light-Powered Robotic Arm Using Living Algae

Times of India - India · india

Researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have developed a miniature robotic arm powered by living microalgae and gel layers, eliminating the need for batteries or motors. The two-centimeter-long actuator uses algae's photosynthetic activity to generate movement, bending and grasping objects underwater. By controlling light conditions, scientists can direct the algae's biological processes, causing the gel layers to swell and the arm to move. This innovation offers a glimpse into a future where living organisms could be integrated into robotic systems for gentle manipulation tasks.
