Many Surgeries Offer Little Benefit Over Placebo

A growing number of surgical procedures may offer little advantage over placebo or non-surgical care, according to emerging research. While some operations are life-saving, studies are increasingly questioning the necessity of others. Randomised controlled trials, once rare in surgery, are now revealing that treatments like appendix removal can be matched by antibiotics, and some spinal fusions show no difference from placebo.

नई रिसर्च बता रही है कि कई सर्जरी का फायदा प्लेसबो या बिना सर्जरी वाले इलाज से ज़्यादा नहीं है। कुछ ऑपरेशन जान बचाने वाले होते हैं, लेकिन कई दूसरे ऑपरेशनों की ज़रूरत पर सवाल उठ रहे हैं। पहले सर्जरी में ऐसे टेस्ट कम होते थे, पर अब पता चल रहा है कि अपेंडिक्स हटाने की जगह एंटीबायोटिक्स भी काम कर सकती हैं, और कुछ स्पाइन सर्जरी का नतीजा प्लेसबो जैसा ही है।
