Urban India Commute: Two-Wheelers Dominate Worker Travel, Students Walk or Bus

The National Household Travel Survey reveals that over half of urban Indian workers, specifically 52.3%, rely on two-wheelers for their commute. Students, however, predominantly use buses (33.7%) or walk (29.6%) to reach educational institutions. While 57% of male urban workers use two-wheelers, women more frequently opt for buses. The survey, covering over 2 million people, also noted that the average one-way trip for urban workers takes 27 minutes and costs ₹1,044 monthly. Rail transport is a significant mode in cities with extensive networks.

नेशनल हाउसहोल्ड ट्रैवल सर्वे से पता चलता है कि शहरी भारतीय कर्मचारियों में से आधे से ज़्यादा, खास तौर पर 52.3%, अपने आने-जाने के लिए दोपहिया वाहनों पर निर्भर हैं। वहीं, छात्र मुख्य रूप से बसों (33.7%) या पैदल चलकर (29.6%) शैक्षणिक संस्थानों तक पहुँचते हैं। जहाँ 57% पुरुष शहरी कर्मचारी दोपहिया वाहन इस्तेमाल करते हैं, वहीं महिलाएँ ज़्यादातर बसें चुनती हैं। 20 लाख से ज़्यादा लोगों को कवर करने वाले इस सर्वे में यह भी बताया गया है कि शहरी कर्मचारियों के लिए एक तरफ़ की औसत यात्रा 27 मिनट लेती है और इसमें हर महीने ₹1,044 का खर्च आता है। जिन शहरों में रेल नेटवर्क बड़ा है, वहाँ रेल परिवहन एक महत्वपूर्ण साधन है।
